The Face Electro issue May ’84
While digging through the archives recently, Shottsman came across a magazine that is perfect for the first of many Holy Roller Classic Mags.
Classic Magazine Number One is The Face magazine Electro special issued way back in May 1984.
The special featured 8 pages dedicated to the ‘fresh new’ Electro music scene that had taken the UK streets by storm, despite the media assuring us that it was a fad. This article reads like a who’s who of the early 80′s Electro world, Keith Le Blanc, Afrika Bambaataa, Tyrone Brunson, Man Parrish, George Clinton, Jonzun Crew, Planet Patrol, Davy DMX, Morgan Khan, Arthur Baker, Pumpkin, and Mastermind Roadshow were all mentioned.
A dance crew out of Wood Green called the Soul Sonic Rockers was also featured in the article, they talked about the UK popping and breaking scene (it was not known as the b-boy scene in at the time in the UK). They talk about the Zulu Rocker’s, Dynamic Rockers, Side Walk, Lyceum Ball room, and also about dance moves like the ‘helicopter’ which was the UK’s version of break dance Windmills.
Also in that issue were articles on the Mastermind Roadshow, Thursday night roller skating @ The Ace in Brixton hosted by DJ Tim Westwood, Papa Levi of Saxon Studio sound system, Malcolm X, Quincy Jones after winning 3 grammies for Micheal Jackson’s ‘Thriller in 1983, and also Trinidad celebrating it’s 150th Carnival.
There is an interview with Ken Livingstone leader of the Greater London Council and Fulham Casuals. They were the Lacoste, Tacchini, Diadora, Lyle and Scott, Pringle wearing, working class stylers of LondonTown.
The first story of this issue of the face was a two page article on Jim Whiting, the designer of the robots from the video of Herbie Hancocks electro classic, ‘Rock it’.
