Kyra,
Thanks so much for your comment. Your book was actually an essential resource for this series. In it were vital interviews and anecdotes, history and your own conclusions and observations that connected some hard to connect dots! You probably noticed this in Part 3.
Means a lot to have your blessing! Much respect.

I haven't been able to view part 3, however, the girls in the video and on the cover of the Malcolm McLaren record wearing the red and white ( Dynamic Force from Bklyn), did not travel to England. They did have an opportunity to travel to Germany, and loved every moment. Stephone is still presently ccoaching and doing the choreography for the group Jumpers In Command. He does use a great deal of Hip Hop and city music in all of his routines. I feel that he is the reason that double dutch and music (fusion) became so successful. His group JIC won the first 5 or 6, tournaments that were held at The Apollo theater. They helped to promote the sport and the idea of rhythm in the ropes from the beginning. Their performances were often called "Street Ballet" by many. I believe that Steph will be doing choreography for Madonna soon. HE is truly the "Dutch Master"

Hi Larry,

Thanks so much for all your comments! I'm so chuffed that someone who has been so instrumental in the history of the game thinks we did a decent job of presenting a view on the world of Double Dutch. And thank you for filling out some of the details, like names and places - this kind of info is hard to find and piece together.

About the girls in the McLaren video, I've posted Part 3, which includes a video of them on Top of the Pops in the UK performing to the song, must be the same girls? Though they were referred to as "The Dynamos". I also have a scan of a small article from a UK magazine that mentions them at the time. I will add it to the post.

Also great to know the background of the Rhythm in the Ropes film. The Xbox commercial I have seen, but it was one of many I left out for space reasons. I didn't realise it won an award.

So again, thanks, really honoured you've taken the time to fill in some gaps!

The girls who appear on the Malcolm McLaren album cover are from Bklyn N.Y. They are Coleen Cumberbatch, Diane Houslin, Fern Jureidini, and Stacey Olden. They were known as the Double Dutch Dynamites. That was quite a number of years ago. They also appear in the video. Mr McLaren was such a great performer, and he will be missed.

Really enjoyed your article. The Fantastic Four were the best of their time. Their speed jumping and free style were truly unequaled. I began coaching double dutch in 1975, and they were the team to beat. I was fortunate enough to work with the girls, and they were beautiful young ladies. Nickie is still involved in the sport as a judge.Yes, the Fantastic Four were disqualified from competing because of their involvement in the McDonald's commercial. There were other reasons as well, but to many this was very unjust. It seemed that just because the league did not sanction the commercial, the girls suffered the consequences of politics. Politics should not have been invoved in the decisiions of the sport.
Malcom McKlaren's music video premiered on The Ed Sullivan Show. The girls featured on the cover were known as The Dynamic Force from Brooklyn N.Y. Their names were Coleen, Diane, Fern and Stacey. I was there when they filmed the video. The Dynamic Force was the team I coached before I began to coach Jumpers In Command.
Peter Hollerman, (not certain of the spelling of last name), was one of the first boys jumping in competittion. He jumped with " House of the Lord", from Bklyn. It was coached by a teacher named Larry Jenkins. He is the one who started my interest in the sport of double dutch jump rope. Stephone Webb has been a member of our group " Jumpers In Command" since the early 1980"s. " Jumpers In Command" won The Best of the Show competition at The Apollo from the beginning early years of the tournament (approx. 8 times). They went on tour with The UniverSoul Circus for a number of years, and the Japanese were able to win many tournaments since then. The team of Jumpers In Command returned to The Apollo to win the tournament 2004. They remain the only American team to win the competition. All others have been won by the Japanese. It should be rememebered that Jumpers InCommand went to Japan to train the original Japanese performance team, which they met at Bronx comm. college after a performance. The Japanese team was originally a dance group, which was trained by JIC>
I have had the pleasure of training and working with the group for over 30 years, and am very aware of the benefits and joy that has been a result of all the experiences we have had over the years.

Hi Helen, Thanks for your comment!

Yes, in answer to the history of Double Dutch, we realise it goes way way way back. But in the article we focussed in on our own interest in Double Dutch is as a member of classic hip hop / pop culture as it rose from the mid-70s which is marked quite nicely by the work of the Double Dutch Cops in New York. ;p

We haven't been able to watch your film actually and would love to get the chance sometime!
Thanks for checking in with us.
