A pause mix is a thing that a lot of hiphop producers did, before they knew they were actually making beats.

Back in the day before we knew what a sampler was, we were extending and looping breaks with our cassette decks and boom boxes. The cassette was literally used like a primitive sampler, the beginning and end points of the loop was made by pure trial and error, some worked and some didn’t, but when it did, it was bedroom dopeness.

How many bedroom scientists simultaeneously came across the amazing curiousity of extending a breakbeat by manipulating the record and pause buttons of our cassette recorders?

Most of us thought we were the first to do it, and pretty much all of us thought we came up with the term ‘pause mixing’ unaware that someone else was pause mixing and calling it ‘pause mixing’ too. One thing you can be sure of was our tape machines could not withstand the abuse of being used in a way it was not built for.

The end of pause mixing came with the new design motorized push button controls, disgusted with this new developement forced upon us we refrained from the pause mix and waited a few years before we were introduced to the sampler.

This is an example of an IG CULTURE pause mix created circa 1985. Salvaged off one of the many of his funk mixtapes from way back. Hard to believe that this is 26 year old bedroom mixing history.

Purchasing a sampler came much much later, but these are the very first moments of Culture’s natural instinct to manipulate music.

The quality is a raw disgrace but this is some vintage Culture history from the tape vault.
